Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay quickly became enthralled after showing her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through the medium of art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a young publicist for a studio. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
